Asterisk 1.8: The Next Major Release

in English by Kevin Fleming of Digium, Inc. at AMOOCON 2010

Abstract

Asterisk 1.8, the next Long Term Support release of the popular open source telephony platform, is scheduled to arrive in 2010. This release will contain a wide range of improvements, from bug fixes and performance enhancements, to significant new features. Many of the new features were developed specifically to address the needs of the European market, including significantly improved native BRI support, enhanced ISDN feature support, Advice of Charge support, and Call Completion Services. In addition, Asterisk 1.8 is planned to include support for IP version 6, which is becoming more important as networks continue to grow and IP version 4 address space dwindles.

This presentation will highlight the major new features in Asterisk 1.8, and talk about how the Asterisk release cycle and support process has changed from the days of Asterisk 1.4.
