Replacing the PSTN - why wait?
in English by Jim Van Meggelen of Core Telecom Innovations Inc. at AMOOCON 2010
Abstract
Early in the days of VoIP it was predicted that the PSTN would eventually be replaced by an all-VoIP network.
Today, the technology to fully connect everyone via VoIP exists, however it has not yet been widely adopted.
ENUM, DNS and a few other things all need to work together in order to replace the PSTN. If more organizations were to adopt these technologies, eventually a critical mass could be reached, and the promise of VoIP might finally be fulfilled.
But there are other challenges as well. For example, security and SPIT (Spam over IP Telephony) need to be taken into consideration.
Also, if we take the responsibility for the network away from the carrier, we must accept the responsibility ourselves.
This talk will attempt to touch on some of these subjects. Discussion will be encouraged.
